Big data 4 Better health

We have more data on cancer than ever before

Large amounts of cancer-related data have been collected on patients in Western Pennsylvania and other regions of the U.S. Per patient we have several billion variables. It remains a challenge, however, to use this data to predict and improve cancer outcomes.

The Cure project develops methods to find informative patterns in the data

Given the size and complexity of the data in this project (several billion pieces of information per patient), we have had to develop machine-learning methods that are highly efficient and that utilize the computational power of the Pittsburgh Super Computer. Doing so allows informative patterns to be discovered in the data in a matter of minutes, rather than hours or even days, as previously required.

We use these patterns to predict cancer outcomes and improve treatments

The methods we are developing are designed to tailor treatments based on an individual patient's clinical and molecular profiles.
