You are invited to a Special Seminar on Monday, August 24th, given by Guergana Savova, PhD, Associate Professor, Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, who will be presenting a seminar on Monday, August 24th, at 10:00 AM titled “Semantic Processing of the Clinical Narrative – Methods and Applications”.
Abstract:
There is an abundance of health-related free text that can be used for a variety of immediate biomedical applications – phenotyping for GWAS, clinical point of care, patient powered applications, biomedical research. The presentation will cover topics within a clinical Natural Language Processing and Understanding program such as relation extraction, event and temporal expression discovery, and linking of events to create timelines of patient’s clinical histories. It will also outline computable gold annotations with linguistic tags and inferentially derived relations created under several NIH-funded projects (thyme.healthnlp.org; share.healthnlp.org, cancer.healthnlp.org) used in the research as well as in shared community tasks organized around them (2013 and 2014 CLEF/ShARE Shared task; 2014 and 2015 SemEval Task 7 Analysis of Clinical Text; 2015 SemEval ClinicalTempEval). Applications to biomedical problems will be discussed within the framework of national networks such as the NCI Informatics Technology for Cancer Research (ITCR), electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE), Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN), Informatics for Integrating the Biology and the Bedside (i2b2), Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). A long-term vision of the clinical Natural Language Processing and Understanding program will be outlined.
